Montague Quarter, central Worthing: the importance of visual animations in planning

We are very excited to announce that as architects for the development, we assisted our Client, Cayuga Homes in securing a planning consent for the addition of 42 new apartments in a three-storey extension to the Montague Quarter Shopping Centre in central Worthing. This development will secure the long-term viability of the shopping centre and will enhance this key part of the town. It proved to be a very successful collaboration with Cayuga and their planning consultants Lewis and Co.

Although a 1980s post-modern building, it is located in the South Street Conservation Area and is subject to a Grade II* listing thanks to 4 sculptures known collectively as “Desert Heads” by Elisabeth Frink. Our normal process of working in 3D, often using visual animations, played an invaluable role in conveying our design ideas to Adur & Worthing Councils and Historic England, starting with an excellent 3D architectural survey carried out by Maltby Land Surveys, moving from various iterations of the early massing through to architectural detailing: we were an open book and were able to demonstrate positive progress from initial concept stage through to planning approval.
